Dish Network was launched in 1996; along with DirecTV, it mainly competes with the cable TV suppliers all throughout the United States. Dish Network is a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) service, which offers audio and satellite television programming in the United States. In 2004, preferred music channels were added from Sirius Satellite Radio to the lineup of audio-only channels of Dish Network, which already has Muzak audio services.

At present, Dish Network has business agreements with several local telephone suppliers to bring up the market of DSL and DISH Network services. In June 2006, Dish Network has signed a contract with WildBlue to deliver broadband by means of satellite. In December 2006, Dish Network lost the distant local channels like ABC, CBS, FOX from NYC or LA, and NBC; however, this does not have an impact on major subscribers of Dish Network. Dish Network provides different kinds of satellite receiving instrumentation for receiving signals from different satellites of Dish Network.

The first satellite antenna of Dish Network was simply known as the DISH Network dish.
