Car Windshield: Cleaning and Maintenance

Though the term \”auto glass\” is used for a car windshield, it is very different from the glass used in the rest of the car. Rear and side windows in a car are made using tempered glass. In case of an accident, tempered glass shatters easily so that passengers can escape and the small shattered pieces of glass do not cause any damage. By contrast, car windshields are made using laminated glass, which are sheets of tempered glass reinforced using a layer of transparent rubber. Upon impact, the windshield does not shatter and the rubber layer prevents glass shards from being jettisoned into the passenger cabin. The windshield is a very important part of passenger safety and windshields should be properly cleaned and maintained to ensure that they function as well as they were designed to.

Cleaning the car windshield frequently not only makes it easy to see out of, but also goes a long way in ensuring a long life for the windshield. Great care needs to be taken to maintain a car windshield. Even the type of cloth used on a car windshield should be chosen carefully. An abrasive material can leave scratches on the glass surface; a soft cloth should always be used. Microfiber cloths are not only soft, but are manufactured specifically with the intention of use as auto-care products. The cleaner used for the windshield should be ammonia free. Most commercial glass cleaners for home usage include ammonia and are chemically unsuitable for car windshields, especially tinted ones. While cleaning the windshield, care should be taken to ensure that it is not under direct sunlight, as it will cause streaks to appear while drying. Cleaning the glass regularly prevent build-up of dirt and grime which can scratch the surface of the glass. Removing a scratch from a car windshield is not easy, but it is possible. A crack should never be treated as a mere scratch. Running fingers down the glass surface offers a good indication of how deep the scratch is and if indeed it is a scratch and not a crack. Hardware and home improvement stores carry stocks of abrasive glass cleaning compounds, which can be used on the windshield. Rubbing the compound over the windshield surface may not completely remove the scratch, but it does cause it to diminish; too faint to be observable by the naked eye. Should the inevitable happen and the windshield does chip or crack, it would be wise to remember that auto insurance companies do have provisions for covering windshield repair. After having the windshield inspected by a certified auto glass repair and replacement centre, insurance companies take their recommendations into consideration and allow clients to proceed with the auto glass repair, or replacement, whichever is deemed necessary. Auto glass repair usually involves injecting the windshield with an acrylic compound, after a vacuum seal has been established around the chipped or cracked area. As the acrylic compound seeps through and hardens, it repairs the glass and provides a flawless surface.
