Glassware is the jewellery of your dining table. Like silver, you have the everyday glasses, the trendy ones and the glasses that simply no one touches unless you have guests. For the latter, investing in such glassware should be almost a once in a lifetime process. Designer glassware costs more and therefore you should make sure that you love and cherish the design you pick.

For the look of sophistication you should think about what is important to you. Firstly what kind of glassware do you require? Wine drinkers will fancy a long stem and a large bowl suitable for containing the scent of a nice wine. On the other hand, at dinner parties you will more than likely want to offer water not to mention brandy snifters and champagne flutes. Before you approach the shops decide which type of glass you require.

Designer glassware should last. There is little point in buying glassware that is going to date quickly, you may love it in the shop but in ten years time it could be debatable as to whether you will still be proud to dress your table in it when your in laws pay a visit.

Lead crystal is deemed popular and is often associated with glamour. For generations it has been the crystal that sits in the dresser while the regular glassware hides in the kitchen. Think about whether you fancy the traditional cut glass series of glassware or whether you fancy something more plain in design. You may find some attractive mouth blown glassware on the market. Such glasses are designed to be used occasionally and are therefore presented at the higher end of the market; they will not live up to the hectic life of an average glass as they can break easily in the dishwasher.

When you buy your glassware it is sensible that you buy enough plus one. As much as you vow and declare to yourself that you will not drop one in the sink, you can at least leave a margin of error. Many items of glassware can be purchased separately so it might be wise to invest in one more to save the longevity of your set.

If you are a serious wine connoisseur you may want to think about the best glass for your beverage. It can be argued that wine is beautiful enough without needing to be dressed up by a fancy wine glass. Some modern designs might not be technically suitable for the drink on offer. If glassware etiquette worries you it might be wise to research your favourite drink and choose glassware that will suit it.

Research the best manufacturers on the internet. Buying from an established glassmaker is not only prestigious but sensible as lines are less likely to continue from season to season. This means that you will not necessarily be scouring EBay for a spare one when you hear that painful glass-shattering sound as one of your designer gems hits the floor. Purchasing in this way also ensures that your glasses will never be in a bargain basement.
